March 2010 to present - Wine Artisan Limited - Winemaker/Director; Part-time Cook

As a small business owner and Director of my own company, Wine Artisan Ltd allows me to work closely with all facets of the Wine Industry through my client base. This includes Winemaking and Viticultural services, and all aspects of our clients business's relating to Marketing, Sales, and Branding. I am also able to indulge my passion for food with casual Kitchen and Catering work in and around Central Otago and Christchurch.

June 2004 to Dec 2009 - Chief Winemaker/Winery Manager VinPro Winery, Central Otago

VinPro is a contract winemaking facility where I was employed to set up, design and build a 1000 tonne winery from scratch in 2004, to be ready for vintage 2005. As Winery Manager/Chief Winemaker, I reported directly to the Managing Director Morley Hewitt and managed a team of 7 full-time staff, (expanding to 20 during Vintage). We made wine for over 20 different growers from all the sub-regions around Central Otago. The majority of these clients were start-up vineyards and I liaised closely with them to help their Sales and Marketing/Branding. Our focus was on producing Pinot Noir, (85% of Vinpro's production) however, we also made Syrah and Merlot and a range of white wines ranging from Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sweet/Late Harvest wines (Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir), Rose, and a white Pinot Noir. Many of the wines made during my time at Vinpro have won awards and accolades including 5 star ratings (Cuisine magazine etc), gold medals and trophies, and wine writer comments for the clients, across all the varietals that we made.

March 2001 to June 2004 – Chief Winemaker/Viticulturist, Akarua Winery, Central Otago

I managed all aspects of the viticulture, winemaking and cellar door roles through to the marketing operations and reported directly to Sir Clifford Skeggs the owner of Akarua. At this time, Akarua was the biggest single vineyard (50 ha) in Central Otago. This was a hands on position which required much co-ordination between the vineyard, the winery and marketing teams. Whilst in this position I successfully built up a team of dedicated people that cumulated in the 2002 Akarua Pinot Noir and Gullies Pinot Noir, winning both number 1 and 2 respectively in 2003 Cuisine magazine’s Pinot tasting (a first for any winery); with the 2002 Akarua Pinot Noir winning Champion Wine of the Show at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards in 2003. A first for Central Otago!

March 1998 to July 2000 – Winemaker Langdale Wine Estate, Canterbury

This was my first sole winemaking position where I helped set up a brand new small winery reporting directly to the General Manager. We made a variety of wines ranging from Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet blend and Petit Syrah. Most of the vines were grown on the Estate vineyard, but I also had to liaise with a handful of local growers and was mentored by consultant winemaker, Alan McCorkindale. The 1998 Langdale Reisling was my first wine ever to be awarded a 4.5 star Cuisine rating. Whilst employed at Langdale Wine Estate, I also helped out in their kitchen whenever time permitted, where I was able to learn a few cooking techniques from their head Chef. This was instrumental in starting my passion for food alongside winemaking.
